SA: Strike ends at car component producer
Negotitations have averted a threatened shutdown of Australia's automotive industry
and the stand-down of thousands of workers.
The Australian Workers Union says a pay dispute with the Victorian component maker has ended.
About 220 workers at Ajax Fasteners have voted to accept a three per cent wage rise,
the result of a compromise hammered out in the Industrial Relations Commission.
The workers had wanted four per cent and the company had previously offered two --
prompting members of AWU and the Australian Manufacturers Workers Union to walk off the
job about 10 days ago.
AWU state secretary BILL SHORTEN says the vote represents a good win for the workers,
who he says were frustrated by the refusal of the company to budge on its offer in earlier
talks.
