Rediscover the Real George Washington on Presidents' Day
Type: News
George Washington's face has been painted, printed, and engraved more than a billion times since his birth in 1732.
And yet even in his lifetime, no picture seemed to capture the likeness of the man who is now the most iconic of all our presidents.
According to a release, in The Many Faces of George Washington: Remaking a Presidential Icon, published by Carolrhoda Books, a division of Lerner Publishing Group, author Carla Killough McClafferty reveals how we can now put a realistic face to George Washington that only his family and friends knew.
In 2005 the leaders of Mount Vernon set out to change the image of our first president who is normally viewed as "old and grumpy" on the dollar bill. They gathered together a team of scientists, art historians, textile curators, artists, and artisans to investigate George Washington as never before. They studied paintings and sculptures of the man, descriptions written by his contemporaries, Washington's own writings including letters to his tailor, his clothes, and perhaps the most personal items of all-several sets of his dentures. Artists used all of this painstaking research to create three life-sized figures of Washington which depict him at three key moments in his life. To finish the look, various craftsmen using 18th century methods created authentic clothing. Each step of the process uncovered new insights into the life and times of a man who was anything but "old and grumpy."
The Many Faces of George Washington: Remaking a Presidential Icon reveals the creation of the three figures of George Washington and rediscovers the man who became the face of a new nation.
Author Carla Killough McClafferty will be signing books and presenting at "The Real George Washington Family Day" at the Minnesota History Center on Saturday, March 12 from Noon to 4 P.M.
