SA: Garrett calls for legislation against nuclear dump

ADELAIDE, April 29 AAP - Australian Conservation Foundation president Peter Garrett today
called on Australian governments to legislate against Australia becoming the dump for the
world's nuclear waste.

At a rally of about 250 tertiary and high school students in Adelaide, Mr Garrett said
nuclear waste was the most toxic, dangerous, uncontrollable and longest-lasting substance that
humans could produce.

The Midnight Oils frontman said the waste had the capacity to enter the human gene pool and
the food chain if it was allowed to be dumped in the Australian outback.

"People will say 'Oh, there goes Garrett, he is getting emotional again'," Mr Garrett said.

"You are right. I am being emotional about this issue and why not, because we are talking
about people's lives, people's environment and in the case of Jabiluka, people's land.

"We want to see our governments put into legislation a very clear statement about not
accepting others' nuclear waste."
